About WD SmartWare
The WD SmartWare™ software solution enhances your drive with easy-to-use automatic backup capabilities that let the software do the work for you. You can either install the complete WD SmartWare application to provide a powerful control center that lets you easily back up and retrieve files, as well as set security options for your drive, or install only the Drive Settings software to apply only the drive security features. A summary of the complete WD SmartWare application includes:
- Drive security. WD SmartWare uses powerful hardware encryption (encrypted drives only) that protects your drive from unauthorized access or theft. By setting a password, your drive and its content are always protected.
- Automatic data protection. Automatic, continuous backup instantly makes a copy of your file whenever you change or add a file, and you can define how many copies of a file you want to maintain on your WD drive.
- Visual summary of your backups. A visual representation of your backup content organizes and displays your content into categories and shows the progress of your backup.
- Easy file retrieval. You can always bring back your valuable data to its original location, whether you've lost all the data on your computer or overwritten an important file.
- Complete control. A single user interface lets you manage all aspects of your drive, including diagnostics and power settings.
About WD SmartWare Tabs
The WD SmartWare user interface is arranged in tabs that control various aspects of your backup, retrieval, and drive and software settings. If you install the full WD SmartWare software application, four tabs appear; if you install only the Drive Settings software, two tabs appear. A summary of each tab follows:
- Home tab. Provides a graphic representation and the capacity of your computer and each WD drive connected to your computer. You can modify the primary drive being categorized with the drop-down menu under the name of your computer. By selecting a different drive, the system will identify the categories of files on that drive. To back up from a drive other than the computer's main hard drive, or to retrieve files to a location other than the computer’s main hard drive, choose the appropriate drive using the drop-down menu shown underneath your computer on the left of the screen and then select the Backup or Retrieve tab. Appears if you install either the full WD SmartWare application or only the Drive Settings software.
- Backup tab. Manages existing backups or lets you create a new backup of your important data including movies, music, documents, e-mail, and photos. Appears only if you install the complete WD SmartWare application.
- Retrieve tab. Retrieves valuable data that has been lost or overwritten. Appears only if you install the complete WD SmartWare application.
- Settings tab. Manages security (for encrypted drives only), diagnostics, power settings and backup parameters. Appears if you install either the full WD SmartWare application or only the Drive Settings software.
