Customizing the Drive Performance Options
The WD SmartWare™ software provides several options for customizing your drive, including naming, securing, and defining how your drive performs. The following customization options are available:
- Security. Create or change your password.
- Registration. Register your WD backup drive.
- Diagnostics. Diagnostic tests available for your drive.
- Sleep Timer. Set the amount of time before your drive automatically powers down.
- Drive Erase. Erases all the information on your drive, including all data and partitions.
To create a password to secure your drive:
- Click Security.
- Enter a password in the Choose a Password field.
- Verify the password in the Verify field.
- If desired, enter a hint to help you remember your password.
- Read the warning text; then click I Understand.
- Click Save Security Settings.
Important: If you forget or lose your password, WD cannot retrieve it for you, and you must erase your drive before you can use it again.
To register your drive:
- Click Registration.
- Enter your first and last name, and your e-mail address.
- If desired, select a preferred language for receiving communication from WD about software updates and other options and opportunities.
- If desired, click the WD Privacy Policy link to read the privacy policy.
- Click Registration. The WD registration page appears in your internet browser.
- Follow the onscreen instructions to register your WD backup drive.
To perform drive diagnostics and status checks:
- Click Diagnostics.
- Identify the diagnostic test or tests you want to run; then click the appropriate button or buttons. WD suggests that you run all the diagnostics tests periodically.
To set the amount of time before your system becomes idle:
- Click Sleep Timer.
- Choose a value from the drop-down menu, from After 10 minutes to Never.
To erase your drive:
- Click Drive Erase.
- Review the warning regarding permanent loss of all data, including all files and partitions, then click I Understand.
- Click Drive Erase.
Important: If you forget or lose your password, WD cannot retrieve it for you, and you must erase your drive before you can use it again.
