WD is committed to ensuring your satisfaction with our products. Our goal is to create products that are easy to use and require minimal setup time so you can begin using them immediately. If you are unable to set up your My Book Live network device for the first time, please review the troubleshooting tips and techniques that follow to help you successfully connect and detect your My Book Live network drive on your home network. If you are still unable to connect your My Book Live after reviewing these steps, please go to Additional Support Resources at the bottom of this page to expedite your support request.

Is Your My Book Live Receiving Power?

If your My Book Live is receiving power, a small light appears on the front of the device. As the network device goes through the setup process, the light becomes amber, and when ready for use, displays a solid green light.

Is Your My Book Live Connected to the Network?

On the back of the My Book Live, two LED lights are located at the top and bottom of the Ethernet port. The light above the Ethernet port represents activity, and the light below the port represents a link to the network.

Is Your Computer Using a Wireless Connection?

If the computer you are using to set up your My Book Live is running on a wireless connection, the My Book Live installation software uses specific network protocols that are commonly blocked by wireless routers and access points. Connecting to the network using a cable bypasses these restrictions.

Creating a Direct Connection

You can create a direct connect to your My Book Live web-based user interface, referred to as the Dashboard. If after performing this step your network device connection is not successful, please go to Additional Support Resources or see the Troubleshooting chapter in the My Book Live User Manual.

To create a direct connection to your My Book Live:

  1. Open a web browser, and type http://mybooklive. Do not append an extension to this address. The My Book Live Welcome screen is displayed.
  2. Select the desired language, accept the License Agreement, and then click Start.

From the My Book Live dashboard (main screen), you can set a device name and other options for your My Book Live network device.

Windows XP and UPnP

For Windows XP users, the UPnP Framework option must be enabled in your Windows Firewall settings to discover your drive on your network. When you run the installer, if UPnP is disabled, a message appears to indicate that the WD installer will automatically enable UPnP for you. If UPnP is already enabled, the message does not appear. For more information about UPnP, please see KBA 5687 in the WD Knowledge Base.
