I. INTRODUCTION

PURPOSE OF THIS DOCUMENT

This document provides specific installation instructions and other information you should know before you install and use the printing-system software. The installation instructions are for the following operating systems:

Windows 2000

Windows XP

For instructions for Macintosh OS components or other systems, see the associated install notes, readme files, or other device information for that system. For more information about the device and printer-driver features, see the HP LaserJet M5035 Series MFP User Guide and the online help included with each software component.

WHO NEEDS THIS SOFTWARE?

All users require this printing-system software. Network clients need the installation CD, or the name of the appropriate network directory, to install the software on their individual workstations.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

The following are compatible system requirements for Windows and Macintosh:

Windows 2000: 333 MHz processor with 64 MB RAM

Windows XP: 333 MHz processor with 128 MB RAM

Windows Server 2003: 550 MHz processor with 128 MB RAM (Standard Edition)

220 MB of available hard-disk space

Mac OS X V10.2.8 and later: Macintosh G3, G4, G5, or Intel Core processor with 128 MB RAM (256 MB RAM recommended)

150 MB of free hard disk space

CD-ROM drive or Internet connection

Dedicated universal serial bus (USB 1.1 or 2.0) connectivity port or network connection

OVERVIEW OF THE PRINTING-SYSTEM COMPONENTS

The CD that is included with the device has software for Windows operating systems and Apple Macintosh operating systems. For more information about a particular printer driver or software component, see the associated online help.

Network administrator software components

HP Web Jetadmin

Network administrators can use HP Web Jetadmin to configure and manage HP devices across a variety of operating systems.

NOTE : HP Web Jetadmin is not included on the software CD. Network administrators can download the HP Web Jetadmin software at the following Web site:

www.hp.com/go/webjetadmin

HP Printer Utility for Mac OS X

Network administrators can use the HP Printer Utility for Macintosh OS X V10.2.8 and later to configure and manage HP devices from the computer. The printing-system software CD-ROM includes the HP Printer Utility as part of the driver installation.

Installer Customization Wizard

The printing-system software CD includes the Installer Customization Wizard as one of the installer options. Network administrators can use this utility to create a custom printer-driver installation package that includes the components specific to your organization. Select the components from the printing-system software CD. If the selected printer drivers support preconfiguration, you are prompted to preconfigure the printer-driver settings. Upon completion, the customization utility produces an executable file (*.EXE). Use the file to install the preconfigured printer drivers on client machines. This utility supports silent, batch operations. To gain access to the customization utility, select Installer Customization Wizard on the first CD browser screen.

HP Preconfiguration

NOTE: HP Preconfiguration only applies to Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

The HP Preconfiguration solution is a component of the Installer Customization Wizard. Network administrators can preconfigure a printer driver before it is deployed on multiple workstations and devices. All of them will share the same configuration.

Two classes of features can be configured: device accessories and printer-driver-feature settings. Use this preconfiguration solution so that access to all of the device accessories through the printer driver is enabled appropriately (for example, access to duplexing units and additional trays and bins). You can preconfigure most printer-driver-feature settings and can lock five of the features to prevent end-users from changing settings. The following printer-driver features can be locked:

Print on Both Sides (Duplex)

Print in Grayscale

Media Type

Paper Source

Output Bin

Go to www.hp.com/go/hpdpc_sw for more information about the HP Preconfiguration utility.

NOTE : You must select a cross-operating system (such as BIOS, Firmware, or Diagnostics) to get to the Preconfiguration utility download option.

Update Now

If you have modified the configuration of the device since installation, the driver can be automatically updated with the new configuration in environments that support bidirectional communication. Click the Update Now button to automatically reflect the new configuration in the driver.

End-user software components

Printer drivers

A printer driver is a software program that other software programs use to gain access to the device features. Typically, you install a printer driver in each device. The printing-system software CD that came with your device includes the following printer drivers, all of which have similar graphical user interfaces:

PCL 5

PCL 6

PS level 3 emulation

The most recent printer drivers and printing-system software is available at the following Web sites:

www.hp.com/support/lj5025mfp

www.hp.com/support/lj5035mfp

Additional printer drivers might be available from an HP distributor or from online sources. See the “TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE” section of this document or see the user guide for more information about obtaining printer drivers and other HP software.

Adobe Acrobat Reader

The printing-system software CD includes Adobe Acrobat Reader for viewing online documentation. If your system does not have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed, clicking any of the links to documentation that is provided in the .PDF file format opens a version of Adobe Acrobat Reader software that runs from the printing-system software CD. The Adobe Acrobat Reader software is not installed on your computer and can only run while the printing-system software CD is in the CD-ROM drive. If you want to install Adobe Acrobat Reader, the latest version is available at the Adobe Web site:

www.adobe.com

Printer documentation

The user guide is located in the following places:

On the printing-system software CD

From within the HP LaserJet printer program group (for Windows operating systems) if selected during software installation

NOTE : Some documents are not available in all languages on the CD. Please check the following Web sites for more documentation and information:

www.hp.com/support/lj5025mfp

www.hp.com/support/lj5035mfp

NOTE : In working toward the goal of allowing everyone access to technology, HP has provided the user guides for this device in hypertext markup language (HTML) Help format (.CHM), which is compatible with most screen-reader programs.

Uninstall

Use the uninstall utility to select and remove any or all of the Windows HP printing-system components. See the "UNINSTALLER" section in this document for more instructions.

www.hp.com/support/lj5035mfp

Click the Release Notes or Readme File links on the printer-driver download page for the appropriate operating system and the printer-driver version.

III. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

In a Windows environment, the CD setup or installation software detects the version of the operating system that you are running. The software is installed in the language that you select. For example, if you are running an English version of Windows and have the language preference set to Spanish, the installation utility installs the Spanish version of the printing software for the appropriate Windows version.
